SEAHAWKS: OT Levi Jones calls off Seattle visit, to meet other teams first

Contrary to earlier reports, ex-Bengals OT Levi Jones won't be visiting Seattle this week.

The report comes from Fox Sports:
A source told FOXSports.com that the ex-Cincinnati Bengals left tackle will not be traveling next week to meet with the Seahawks as originally scheduled. Instead, Jones will pursue feelers he has received from other teams first.
To Continue...

Jones became a cap casualty because he was set to earn $6.2 million in base salary in 2009, and presumably to make room for S Roy Williams, who the Bengals came to terms with Wednesday.

MARINERS: Washburn pitches strong, M's still lose fourth straight

Mariners bats continued to be easily silenced, as they were shut out for eight-straight innings in a 3-1 loss to the Royals today in Kansas City.

Despite nine hits, the Mariners could only manage one run, rendering Jarrod Washburn's seven-inning performance of two runs, one earned, meaningless.

The loss is the fourth-straight for the Mariners, who have already dropped out of first place in the AL West division behind the Rangers.

To continue...

The win was the third of the season for Royals pitcher Brian Bannister, who now has a 1.48 ERA through four starts. He gave up only five hits, struck out seven and allowed no runs. He also forced the Mariners into four double plays.

It's the third-straight game where the Mariners have failed to score more than two runs.

They did have a chance to tie the game in the top of the ninth with the bases loaded, two out and Ichiro Suzuki at the plate. He ground out in a fielder's choice. It was his only out of the game.

Catcher Rob Johnson continued his struggles at the pate, going 0-for-3. He struck out each time.

Meanwhile, Ronny Cedeno, in his first start since April 22, fumbled a routine grounder that allowed the first run of the game in the bottom of the third. He failed to reach base in three at bats, striking out each time, and now has a .138 batting average in 29 at bats this season.

SS Yuniesky Betancourt was given the game off but pinch hit in the ninth, reaching base on a walk.

The Mariners now go on the road for a three-game series against the Twins (13-15), who the Mariners tied with in a four-game series to open the season.

SEAHAWKS: Projecting the Rooks - Mike Teel

In 2009, many fans were hoping for a quarterback to be the heir apparent to Matt Hasselbeck. Instead, they got a sixth-round pick with plenty of upside and even more downside.

Hasselbeck commented before the draft how he doesn't trust high draft picks since they're handed everything rather than having to fight for it as he did, a sixth-round pick.

So Mike Teel was the selection, and he'll have plenty of opportunity to fight and scrap for a roster spot. Whether it makes a difference remains to be seen.

To continue...

Mike Teel
6-3
225 pounds
College stats:

The skills

Unlike when Hasselbeck came out of Boston College, Teel has the ideal physical attributes. He has good size and more importantly, a strong arm.

Throwing to fellow draft picks Tiquan Underwood and Kenny Britt all three years he was a starter, Teel had time to grow with his receivers, and like them, he made steady improvement every year.

But he was also inconsistent and temperamental. Despite showing signs of strong leadership in leading his team to an upset win over top-10 ranked Rice in 2006, he also showed signs of being a poor leader, punching a teammate near the end of a 2008 loss.

Here's a video on the team's reaction to it:
Sports Videos, News, Blogs

All in all, Teel is a fiery competitor who needs work on going through his progressions and staying calm under pressure if he's going to stick in the NFL.

Go here for a more detailed scouting report.

Rookie projection

Teel will have a chance to make the squad as the third quarterback, but to do so, he will have to beat out third-year pro Jeff Rowe.

Rowe was a fifth-round pick of the Bengals in 2007. He spent that year as their third quarterback before being demoted to the practice squad in 2008. From there, he was signed by Seattle to their 2008 roster.

The two young quarterbacks are similar in talent, both having good size and strong arms with questionable decision-making. Playing the shallow shotgun in college, Rowe was more raw, but it's hard to know how much he's improved since entering the NFL.

While Rowe was the higher pick, Teel put up better numbers in college in a tougher conference, albeit with better surrounding talent.

Both player have the talent to develop into starters, but only one will likely get that chance in Seattle. Unless Rowe can improve on his slow, slow release, Teel may have the better shot. Either way, neither likely gets the chance to play this year, so Teel's projection is:
0 passing yards
0 touchdowns

The long projection

All the pundits were searching for the next Tom Brady this year, but the fact is Brady was a once-in-a-lifetime pick. No Hall of Fame quarterback has been selected beyond the third round since 1980 except for Warren Moon (undrafted) and Brady.

So we can safely say Teel won't be making it to Canton. But still, there are plenty of solid starters and Pro Bowlers who were drafted low or went undrafted all together.

But projecting whether Teel is one of those players is impossible at this point. It's doubtful even the Packers knew what they had in Hasselbeck when he was a rookie.

Teel certainly has the physical talent, but whether he has the drive and mental makeup to be a starter remains to be seen. Chances are he's just another late-round quarterback who's drafted and then never heard from again.

But then, you never know. Some people are just late, really late, bloomers.

SOUNDERS FC: Le Toux looking forward to more time at striker

Le Toux has a chance to start at
striker in place of the red-carded
Fredy Montero.
Greg Roth / NSS

Starting at midfield for most of the season, Sebastien Le Toux lost his starting job to Steve Zakuani during Seattle’s loss to Chivas USA, April 18.

But Le Toux wouldn’t have to wait on the sidelines for long, as he wowed a packed house at a US Open Cup match against Real Salt Lake 10 days later, then set up Seattle’s game-tying goal against Chicago later that week.

And he did it all at forward, a position very familiar to the Frenchman. Now, he’ll practice this week hoping head coach Sigi Schmid gives him a chance to start in place of the red-carded Fredy Montero.

To Continue...

“What I prefer is to play up front,” Le Toux said. “But if Schmid asks me to play midfield, I will do my job to play midfield. But I am learning everyday. It’s a new position for me so I’ve got to make progress at the position.”

As of Tuesday, Le Toux hadn’t been told if he’d start or not.

"I think the coach is still thinking about it," Le Toux said. "But no matter what I will do my best and am working real hard and getting ready."

A natural striker
Seasoned Sounders fans are familiar with Le Toux’s efforts at striker.

Playing for the USL-1 Sounders from 2007-2008, Le Toux scored 24 goals. Among his numerous accolades, Le Toux earned MVP honors in 2007 for leading the league in scoring with 10 goals and 24 total points.

Before emigrating to the U.S., Le Toux played primarily as a defender for FC Lorient in the French League 2 and French First Division club Stade Renais.

Le Toux will potentially provide an advantage for the Sounders at forward. Known for his tenacious work ethic, Le Toux doesn't shy away from helping out on both sides of the ball, something Jaqua and Montero aren’t well known for. Experienced at defender, Le Toux has the tackling ability of a defender with the attacking skills of a forward.

Leading up to to this weekend
Starting in a US Open Cup play-in against Real Salt Lake as a striker April 28, Le Toux was all over the stat sheet, pairing two goals with two assists.

Le Toux prepares to boot one of his two goals in
Seattle's 4-1 win against Real Salt Lake in a U.S.
Open Cup play-in.
Greg Roth / NSS

Le Toux got a chance to play at forward for the first time in an official MLS regular season match last Saturday when Montero was ejected from the match with a red card. Le Toux subbed in for Zakuani, then moved to forward after Nate Jaqua went to midfield.

Playing with fresh legs and his trademark high energy, Le Toux set up Seattle’s lone goal to tie the game 1-1 by forcing a corner kick. The set piece goal was the first of the season and more importantly gave Seattle a tie despite playing nearly half the game shorthanded.

“[Le Toux] certainly presents us alternatives, and it was nice to be able to play him up front, where he’s obviously more comfortable than he is in a wide position,” head coach Sigi Schmid said.

SOUNDERS FC: Around the pitch - Club considering opening more seats

Fan's pleas for for the club to open more of the 67,000 seats available in Qwest Field aren't going unnoticed.

Jose Romero of the Seattle Times confirms Seattle's front office is considering opening up more seats in the lower bowl of Qwest Field to accommodate the demand for tickets.
The team wants to make sure those seats will sell out before it decides to open them up for purchase. A decision could come very soon.

Montero
Romero also has an article about Fredy Montero taking on the roll of a fan as he sits on the sidelines, suspended for Sunday's game due to a red card.
"For now I'm a fan," Montero said in Spanish after practice Wednesday. "I can't take part with the other players, so we all suffer the same. I'm taking the perspective that the team will win and play well, and I'll be like a fan."

MARINERS: Silva shelled as Royals blow out M's

Carlos Silva

After his latest poor outing, Carlos Silva's days as a starter could be numbered.

Faced with the very real possibility of losing his spot in the rotation, Silva had perhaps his worst outing as a Mariner in Wednesday's 9-1 loss to the Kansas City Royals.

To Continue...

Silva's first inning wasn't exactly what one would expect from someone pitching for his job. He allowed three runs on four hits and a hit batter.

The third inning wasn't much better. Silva (1-3) gave up a leadoff home run to Mark Teahen followed by three singles. A run scored on a double play then an inexplicable balk by Silva plated another.

Silva's line: 3 innings, 8 hits, 6 earned runs, 1 walk, 0 strikeouts, 70 pitches.

It didn't help that the offense fell silent for the second day in a row. The Mariners squandered three big scoring opportunities, the first of which came in the fifth inning when they failed to score with the bases loaded and one out.

The only run came on Adrian Beltre's sacrifice fly in the sixth. Then Russell Branyan, attempting to score on Ken Griffey Jr.'s fly ball, was thrown out easily at home plate to end the inning.

So what's next for Silva?

A move to the bullpen seems likely at this point. It's just a matter of who his replacement in the rotation will be. Left-hander Garrett Olson was called up to replace Shawn Kelley, who had to leave Tuesday's game with a strained oblique.

Olson worked five innings of mop-up duty releif of Silva, so with the left-handed, long-relief role occupied, Jason Vargas becomes the likely candidate to move into the rotation.

Of course, that is assuming Silva's short rope has reached its end and Don Wakamatsu won't give him one more start.

Silva certainly didn't show any signs of life in this one.

SEAHAWKS: OT Levi Jones schedules Seattle visit

Just hours after LT Levi Jones was released by the Bengals, he has scheduled a visit with the Seahawks.

At one time the franchise left tackle in Cincinnati, his role was taken by the sixth overall pick in this year's draft, Andre Smith.

Jones became a cap casualty because he was set to earn $6.2 million in base salary in 2009, and presumably to make room for S Roy Williams, who the Bengals came to terms with today.

UPDATE: Check the end of the article for Levi Jones' career stats.

To continue...

Jones, 29, was the 10th overall pick in the 2002 draft and immediately became their starting left tackle. Though he never went to a Pro Bowl, Jones was often acknowledged as one of the best young tackles in the game.

That was, however, before injuries cut down on his effectiveness and play time. During the past three seasons, he has missed 19 starts.

Before the draft, the Bengals made it clear they would either try to trade Jones or just outright cut him.

Interest in this Jones may show Seattle is lacking faith in their own. Walter Jones has yet to make an appearance in mini-camp, still recovering from last year's season-ending knee injury.

Levi Jones turns 30 in August and isn't a for-the-future type but an immediate starter. Should he sign with Seattle, it would be at a hefty price tag for left tackle insurance.

Another possibility is he could start at guard and shift to left tackle should Walter Jones get injured, but whether Seattle can get him at guard money or not will depend on the market for him.

Any team needing a starting left tackle should be interested.

UPDATE: Here are Jones' career stats:

SOUNDERS FC: Breaking: New MLS Philadelphia franchise to be called "Philadelphia Union"

Various sources indicate that the new MLS franchise in Philadelphia, set to play next year will be called "Philadelphia Union."

Sounders Fan Insider received an e-mail today via Facebook stating that the name of the official "Philadelphia MLS Fans" Facebook Group Page name has been changed to "Philadelphia Union Fans."

To Continue...

In addition several fans on Big Soccer Message boards have posted links to sites that sell official MLS merchandise.

Pictures of the merchandise were taken down, but the team nickname remained. Now the link is down and access leads back to Philadelphia's "Big Soccer" message board. MLS Rumors has what allegedly, are pictures of the scarves and T-shirts with the clubs name and crest on their web site.

Union was one name that was brought up by fans but never made it on the ballot for the Seattle franchise. On Seattle's name the team ballot was Seattle FC, along with Alliance and Republic. All three names were overwhelmingly rejected by the majority of fans in favor of "Sounders" when a write in catagory was added to the ballot. "The Alliance" was voted on by season ticket holders and members and was then adopted as the official name of the Sounders FC membership group.

It seems that Union is much more befitting the city of Philadelphia given their rich history. In addition, it seemed to be an overwhelming favorite by the fans of Philadelphia when a fan vote took place earlier in the year. Other names on the Philly ballot were: "AC Philadelphia" or "Philadelphia AC" "City" and "Philadelphia SC". There were a lot of Philadelphia fans that liked the name Philadelphia Athletic but that was a non starter due to the fact that Major League Baseball owns the trademark on the old "Philadelphia Athletics".

The official announcement by the club will take place on Monday, May 11th at 11:30 (EDT). Here are excerpts from the press release:

"PHILADELPHIA, PA (April 30, 2009) – Major League Soccer (MLS) Philadelphia 2010 today revealed the date for an announcement ceremony to unveil the club’s name, colors, logo, and ticket pricing. The celebration will be hosted at City Hall by Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter on Monday, May 11 at 11:30am."

MLS Philadelphia CEO & Operating Partner Nick Sakiewicz. “We’ve created an authentic brand that reflects Philadelphia’s deep-rooted history and the wealth of feedback gathered from our supporters. The arrival of top-flight soccer in Philadelphia is about to feel decidedly more tangible.”

SEAHAWKS: Projecting the Rooks - Courtney Greene

It's been a long time since the Seahawks have had a hammer in the secondary ("The Hammer"), but things could change with the arrival of former Rutgers S Courtney Greene.

This four-year starter has a ton of ability, but as you might expect from a seventh-round pick, he has a hefty downside with plenty of room to grow.

Greene is the first safety taken in the draft for GM Tim Ruskell, and 'Hawks fans have plenty of reason to hope he develops into a future starter.

To continue...

Courtney Greene
6-0
218 pounds
College stats:

The skills

Physically, Greene is about as solid as you could hope. He has good size at 6-foot, 218 pounds, and his 4.52 40-yard dash was amongst the best at the combine. He also has very good strength and quickness.

In coverage, he's going to make the big hits and was a tackling machine at Rutgers, finishing his career with 386 tackles.

However, he tends to bite hard on double moves and play actions. He'll need to make a ton of improvement on discipline and coverage skills so the 12th Man won't be cursing his name for giving up big plays.

Rookie projection

Seattle has gone with Deon Grant and Brian Russell at safety the past two seasons, and things don't look like they will change this year.

That leaves room on the bench, where Jordan Babineaux has his roster spot on lockdown as he has for the past five seasons. If Greene is going to make the team, then he will have to beat out third-year pro C.J. Wallace and second-year pro Jamar Adams for the fourth spot.

All three players have a similar skill set with Greene perhaps possessing the most upside due to his range and quickness. He also had a better college career. Still, experience may be enough for Wallace and Adams to beat him out.

As it is, Greene shouldn't be expected to make the opening day roster, but injuries will likely give him some playtime:
8 tackles
0 sacks
0 interceptions

The long projection

Greene began making plays day one at Rutgers, but he'll likely have a much longer road ahead of him in the NFL.

The main concern is that he may have already peaked in college. He failed to show marked improvement in college from year to year and actually had a down year as a senior.

If he can't improve on his coverage and become more than a heavy hitter over the middle, then Greene will struggle to just remain in the NFL during his career.

By adding Greene, Ruskell got good value in the seventh and hedged his bet that one of Greene, Wallace and Adams may develop into more than just special teams players.

If everything falls into place, Greene could develop into a very good starter with the ability to play deep coverage and up close to the line of scrimmage, better than either Grant or Russell.

SEAHAWKS: Reading the field - Hill's contract details revealed

Hill hastily signed a six-year $38 million contract last week after the club rescinded the franchise tag from the outside linebacker.

Contract details have recently leaked.
Base Salaries
2009: $5M
2010: $6M
2011: $4.5M
2012: $5M
2013: $5.5M
2014: $5.5M

To Continue...

The numbers add up to $31.5 million, and Scout.com makes the assumption that the rest of the money comes from signing bonuses and incentives. $15.5 million is guaranteed.

The report also has Ken Lucas' and Justin Griffith's contract details along with free-agent rookie details.
Cornerback Ken Lucas is signed for one year at $2.3 million dollars.

Fullback Justin Griffith is signed for one year at $620,000. Griffith likely received a signing bonus of $50,000, which would qualify for the "Minimum Salary Benefit," meaning his cap charge would be just $460,000.

Hackett headed to Baltimore
The Ravens need receivers and they're bringing former oft-injured Seahawk D.J. Hackett.

Hackett was a free agent last offseason but GM Tim Ruskell didn't pursue him. Hackett landed with the Panthers where he suffered a couple injuries. He was released this offseason.

The Panthers are also bringing in former Jaguar Jerry Porter, among others.

SOUNDERS FC: Sounders reserve match notes & quotes w / slide show

TUKWILA- Under sunny, then cloudy, then rainy, then sunny and then rainy skies, Sounders FC defeated Seattle University 4-1 in a Tuesday reserve match out at Starfire Sports Complex. Jarrod Smith and Roger Levesque each had a pair of goals to give the Sounders everything they needed for the win. Oh yes, Freddie Ljungberg's new puppy was in attendance as well.

To Continue...

Seattle remained scoreless the first half and was content to maintain possession for a large portion of the first 45 minutes before unleashing the hounds in the second half with a four goal barrage, along with other scoring opportunities.

With the exception of a few players such as Pete Vagenes, Stepenen King and Jarrod Smith who started, today's line up was almost identical to the starting lineup that was used for the USOC match last week against Real Salt Lake.

Sounders FC Lineup

(F) Roger Levesque — (F)Jarrod Smith

(LM)Stephen King — (LCM) Patrick Ianni — (RCM)Peter Vagenas — (RM)Sanna Nyassi

(LB)Zach Scott — (LCB) Tyson Wahl — (RCB) Taylor Graham — (RB)Evan Brown

(G)Chris Eylander

Subs: Roger Levesque (Sebastien Le Toux ‘70), Jarrod Smith (Fredy Montero ‘60), Peter Vagenas (Kevin Forrest ‘46)

Tyrone Marshall Quotes:

On scoring on Seattle's first set play

"We tried to get up there and challenge it and see if we can probably get a head on it, whatever we can on it. We don't know when we are going to get another corner kick so you have to make the most out of it. We got the set play, 'big Nate (Jaqua)' challenged it as well as did Jon (Hurtado). I kind of fell in behind them and the ball kind of slipped through and went up. It was a reactionary play. I stuck my foot out, it hit my boot and it went in."

On the role that Jacqua played in the goal

"I think it was key, Nate(Jaqua) is a big boy, if you give him space and time, he is going to get up there on set plays, put his head on it and get a goal on it. It was key for Nate to occupy that near post space."

On getting forward on set plays

"Playing with Sigi (Schmid) before, I knew I would get the opportunity to get up on set plays. He stresses a lot on set plays because it can change a game for us. It can win it for us or it might lose it for us. In some cases you can lose a game, especially defensively. You can get scored on and offensively you can score a goal to win a game so he always stresses that we need to practice on set plays. So, I was excited because I know I am going to get the opportunity to get up, get forward and get on the end of some of those crosses and we did on the game on Saturday."

Kasey Keller Quotes:

On the goal that was scored by Chicago

"I definitely reacted slow. I can't just dive not knowing where the ball's at, so by the time it got through the crowd, it was past me before I could get my arm fully extended, which is always frustrating, it is just part of the game; deflections, things like that, it's all normal."

On his shutout streak ending:

"(I)could care less it is about points. 13 points is what I am happy about. Like I was telling Tony Ventrella the other day 6-6 is a point 1-1 is a point, if you contributed to your team's ability to pick up points, that's what I am excited about."

Sigi Schmid Quotes:

Not happy about red card on Montero

“In the world of football nowadays, I just think players take a little knock,” Schmid said. “... If the guy rolls over three times, there’s no injury. If he rolls over twice, there might be a little knock. If he rolls over once, he probably has a strain. If he doesn’t move at all, he’s probably really hurt.

“When they roll over, you know they’re not hurt. ... Part of it is gamesmanship, and I’m going to take advantage of anything I can to gain an advantage in the game. But on the same token, from another professional, do you really want to suspend another professional?”

“Did he get his arm up? Was his elbow near Segares’ head? Yes; there’s no disputing that,” Schmid said. “But did he throw an elbow? I think when you watch it, it becomes pretty obvious that didn’t happen.

“For me the bigger concern right now is, I think sometimes situations occur on the field that players embellish and overdramatize what happens.”

“I think it’s all over the world,” Schmid said. “You watch soccer anywhere in the world: A guy gets hit in the thigh, and he grabs his knee. A guy gets hit in the ankle, and he grabs his knee. A guy gets hit in the shoulder, and he grabs his face. It’s just wrong.”

On scoring first set piece goal

"Guys get to know each other a little better when a guy gets a ball to you, you make your movement off of that and obviously somebody's supposed to go to the near post like Jaqua did and some one's got to go to that back post as well which Tyrrone did, to make sure guys get in certain spots. They did and Tyronne scored the goal.

Our consistency of service, we tell our guys, 'there are only three spots you can hit and if you can hit one of those three, you know were good.' We still have to get better at it. I am happy we scored a goal but I think we can still do better off of our free kicks and set pieces".

SOUNDERS FC: Scoreless streak behind him, Keller could "care less"

_
What would it be like when a ball finally made it past Sounders keeper Kasey Keller - if ever?

Fans finally learned the answer to that question last Saturday when Chicago's Marco Pappa, screened by teammates, shot a ball low to the right corner of the net.

Thus ended Keller's 456 minutes of shutout play, an MLS record. But Keller wasn't too concerned with the loss of his streak.

"[I] could care less," Keller said. "If you feel you’ve contributed to your team’s ability to pick up points, that’s what I’m excited about.”

To Continue...

The Sounders, down a man due to a Fredy Montero red card, were outplayed for most of last Saturday's match against the Chicago Fire.

However, Keller was able to hold off the Fire from doing too much damage, making four saves while breaking up numerous plays for the 1-1 tie. In total, Keller saw 15 shots to Seattle's four.

The goal came on a Cuauhtemoc Blanco cross to Marco Pappa, who was shielded by a screen, making it hard for Keller to react to the shot.

“I can’t just dive not knowing where the ball's at," Keller said. "So by the time it got through the crowd, it was just past me before I could get my arm fully extended, which is always frustrating."

Keller, a seasoned vet at 39-years-old, still looks back at goals to analyze what happened.

"Could I have been a little further back?" Keller said. "Could I have been a little bit further forward? Was my angle right? You’re always just making sure you did the right thing. I’m not different even at my age.”

This Sunday, Keller and the Sounders face the one-win L.A. Galaxy at home. L.A. hasn't put up more than one goal in the last five games.

The match will surely be an opportunity for Seattle to tally three more point to pad pad their second-place standing in the Western Conference.

"It’s about points," Keller said. "Right now, 13 points is what I’m happy about."

MARINERS: Game Preview: Seattle Mariners (15-12) vs Kansas City Royals (16-11)

_
After losing a two-game series to the offense-heavy Texas Rangers, the first-place Seattle Mariners will now be taking on the American League Central Division leading Kansas City Royals in another two-game series.

The Mariners will to go with RHP Carlos Silva (1-2; 7.36 ERA; ) while the Royals will be using RHP Sidney Ponson (0-4; 7.16 ERA; ). Both pitchers have been struggling as of late and will be trying to prove themselves, which could lead either pitcher to overthrow.

To Continue...

With $12 million being paid out to Silva this season, he'll be trying to prove he is worth the money. Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu has recently commented on Silva’s struggles.

"At some point, he is going to have to make some adjustments," Wakamatsu said. "If not, we have to make adjustments. But at this point, going forward, is that rope shorter? Yeah. At some point he's going to have to come out and give us some good outings."

Silva has a career 4.10 ERA and a 5-4 record against the Royals in 18 games.

Ponson, 32, is currently leading the majors in losses (4) while he is hoping to finally stay with the Royals for more than one full season, something he has not done since his tenure with Baltimore, which ended after the 2005 season.

Luckily the Mariners will be able to avoid Royals starter Zach Greinke who is leading the American League in wins (6), strikeouts (54) and leads all regular starters with a 0.40 ERA.

MARINERS: Blowup in the 10th as M's lose

It was a story of sevens for both the Mariners and starting pitcherErik Bedard. Bedard pitched seven great innings striking out seven and surrendering just one run on seven hits. Bedard hadn't given up a run until the top of the seventh when Nelson Cruz homered to left.

Ultimately Bedard's effort would be a waste as a series of unfortunate circumstances allowed the Texas Rangers to score six runs topped by a Jarrod Saltalamacchia grand slam as Seattle lost 7-2.

To Continue...

Seattle's relief core, which until this week led the American League in ERA, took another blow.

Exhausted from Sunday's 15 inning slugfest, Shawn Kelley suffered a strained left oblique and had to be escorted off the field after just three pitches.

Denny Stark, who has come back from two Tommy John surgeries and had pitched in the last two games relieved Kelley. Stark got two quick outs but four singles in-a-row and Saltalamacchia's slam ended the Mariner's hopes of keeping the game close.

"I got two outs and couldn't find the third one for a while," Stark said. "They were able to find some open field, and it's just the way it goes sometimes. It was one of those days."

SEAHAWKS: Who is Red Bryant?

One year ago, DT Red Bryant was the toast of the Seahawks 2008 draft. With neither Lawrence Jackson nor John Carlson the most sexy of picks, Bryant was the wild card fourth-round pick who could be Seattle's next mid-round find.

But he couldn't stay healthy as a rookie and managed only eight tackles in four games. This offseason, he was the forgotten man by most in Seattle's defensive line rotation.

My how things change. Now, after a great showing during the team's latest mini-camp, Bryant is once again the topic of conversation.

To continue...

So if his rookie season is to be considered a mulligan then let's treat him like a rookie and go through the scouting report to see if he's ready to start.

From Scout's Inc.
Strengths: Shows good initial quickness for size, aggressive and makes the occasional play in the backfield. Has excellent bulk, though inconsistent in this area can stay low to the ground and is stout at the point of attack . . . Has excellent size and can anchor when teams run at him. Flashes an effective rip move and shows a good not great motor when rushing the passer. Gets hands up when isn't going to get to the quarterback, times jumps well and excels at tipping passes.

Weaknesses: Lacks ideal closing speed . . . Takes too long to change directions, doesn't show a wide variety of pass rush moves and doesn't force offensive linemen to redirect in pass protection . . . Doesn't always use hands to protect legs and struggles to fight over cut blocks. Lacks ideal range and isn't going to make many plays in pursuit. Gets too caught up in individual battles, takes too long to locate the ball carrier and gets caught out of position at times.

Overall: Bryant doesn't have ideal closing speed or athletic ability but he has the quickness, size and toughness to develop into an excellent run stuffer and adequate interior pass rusher if he can stay healthy and sharpen his technique. He projects as an early second-day pick.

Because of his size and space-eating ability, Bryant was projected by most pundits to be a nose tackle in a 3-4 defense. He carried a second round grade with most.

Instead, the 'Hawks took him for their 4-3, desperate for some help in run defense in the wake of Marcus Tubbs' early retirement from injury.

Now, recently acquired Colin Cole has been brought in to fill that hole, leaving Bryant with an uphill battle for playing time.

Bryant has a nice story with his connection to Seahawks legend Jacob Green, but he's yet to prove anything on the football field for Seattle.

It wasn't until his senior year that Bryant had a breakout season for the Aggies, but the 'Hawks may need his breakout in the NFL sooner.

Bryant has plenty of talent and upside, and he should be a valuable player in the line rotation. But it may take some time before he can rightfully line up beside Brandon Mebane as the anchor he needs to be for Seattle's defense.

SOUNDERS FC: Nate Jaqua, the perfect decoy

_
Standing 6-foot-4, Sounders forward Nate Jaqua lumbers over most defenders on the pitch, giving him a distinct advantage during headers.

So it's no surpise Freddie Ljungberg targeted the forehead of Jaqua during last Saturday's 1-1 tie against the Chicago Fire at the 74th minute.

The Fire knew it too, and that's why Seattle scored.

To Continue...

Crowding Jaqua in front of goal, the Fire devoted several defenders to make sure Jaqua would not connect with Ljungberg's kick.

However, the ball sailed just above the heads of Jaqua and his surrounding company, and wound up landing next to Tyrone Marshall, who wasted no time sending the ball to the back of the net.

Chicago Keeper Jon Busch was noticeably upset, pointing to Marshall while looking at his teammates as if to ask, "Who was marking him?"

Whoever it was, he was probably drawn off his man to defend against the 6-4 forward.

The play was so seamless it looked as if Ljungberg purposely mislead the defense. But, it was an accident.

Jose Romero has Ljungberg's plan:

Ljungberg was aiming for the big man in the middle, Nate Jaqua, but the ball sailed over his 6-foot-4 frame as a Fire defender knocked him away.

SEAHAWKS: Reading the field - Seahawk media curse hits Curry

The Times' Danny O'Neil found a top-10 list by NFL.com's Vic Carucci listing the rookies who would have the biggest impact on their team.

Starting linebacker and no. 4 overall pick Aaron Curry was left off the list, despite second round LB Rey Maualuga making it.

It's official, Seattle's media curse has hit the no. 1 safest and top ranked draft pick.

Signings, injuries
The Seahawks signed FB David Kirtman to the squad, yesterday.

Seahawks whoop up on some high-schoolers
During a charity basketball game in Bellingham, Wash., Deion Branch, Marcus Trufant and several other Seahawks apologetically beat the Squalicum boys basketball team 87-84.

From the Bellingham Herald:
"Our biggest thing coming in was to not lose this game," Seahawks receiver and head coach for the game Deion Branch said. "It was a lot of fun. We enjoyed it. I wasn't surprised at all by how well they played, those guys are good. They should win the state title again playing like that."

SOUNDERS FC: Column: Starfire a good venue for U.S. Open Cup matches

The Seattle Sounders will return to the Starfire Sports Complex on Tuesday, May 26, to take on the Colorado Rapids in a second pre-round qualifying match in the Lemar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. There are some folks that would like the game to be played at the Sounders' MLS home at Qwest Field.

I am not one of them.

To Continue...

Don't get me wrong, I love the X-Box pitch at Qwest Field. I have great seats and the pre-match and match atmosphere is second to none.

The USOC is the longest running tournament in the U.S. As much as MLS and players and coaches say they give the tournament importance, the realty is that the event is not perceived as important by non hardcore soccer fans in the U.S. The historical tournament still has not captured the imagination or dollars of the broader soccer community in the U.S. yet.

Why having the match at Starfire makes sense

Typically, the early round matches are played at small stadiums in front of sparse crowds. Generally, the matches are not televised or covered much by the press. There is not a lot of marketing compared to MLS league matches. Although, I think our club did a great job of promoting it and talking it up on the club's official Web site.

The USOC matches at this time of year are early round games and they are played on weeknights. In my humble opinion, it just does not make business sense for the club to host a match at Qwest and have only 8,000 to 10,000 people show up. It would not be cost effective and the atmosphere would seem watered down.

I am willing to be wrong here but I don't think the demand for tickets for these matches are an attractive purchase compared to an MLS game. People don't want to pay to watch what is mostly perceived as a reserve squad with a few starters sprinkled in.

Given the fact that the match was not on television, the press and club did their best to bring the fans to the match as much as possible. (How about some TV coverage next time fellas?)

The place has charm

I covered the match for NSS this last Tuesday, and I was curious how Starfire would be able to effectively host a match with a rather large crowd for an MLS squad with a lot more media pressence. I used to love going to the USL matches when I could. It was always fun to meet fans for pizza prior to the match and then after the match as well.

After the rain subsided last Tuesday, the sun peaked a bit and the smell of the trees and flowers that surround the complex was intoxicating. Seeing the fans roam around prior to the match drinking soda and eating hot dogs, I immediately had the feeling that I was attending a big family picnic with a bunch of friends and then watching a top-flight soccer match, a feeling one would unlikely get at Qwest.

Starfire seats approximately 4,000 fans fairly comfortably. In addition, there is room for expansion if the club or folks at Starfire decide to expand. The parking is not optimum but a lot of the parking so no further away from the venue than some decent parking available near Qwest Field. Also, the prices are reasonable compared to private parking lots in the downtown area. In addition, the way the the trees and foilage surround the walk way that leads to the complex, make for a beautiful walk to the match.

Great seating and sight lines
The worst seat at Starfire is as good as any premium seats that you will find at Qwest, save behind the goal (no pun intended). To be able to see some of our current stars and stars of tomorrow up close and personal in an intimate environment like this was a real treat. It was a small but passionate crowd. Frankly, I have never heard Starfire louder than I did last Tuesday night but then again, I was not there when the Sounders defeated Atlanta to win the USL championship in 2007.

Fan Friendly
I love the fact that fans can line up along the path to the locker room and the players are willing to sign autographs on the way back after the match. LeToux came out after his press interview and signed every fan's autograph until the last fan had left.

Some folks like to take campers to camp, some prefer tents. Qwest Field is like a big cushy motor home with most of the creature comforts of a house but is it really camping? Starfire is kind of like a comfortable tent with a stove and everything you need to enjoy a peaceful, yet action packed, natural getaway experience with friends and family.

So in this writer's opinion, what Starfire does, provide, is a cozy and charming game day experience for fans. Of course, I prefer a big league atmosphere when it come to MLS but once in awhile it is a lot of fun to return to the lovely and quaint Starfire sports complex with a few thousand fans to watch a match. It is also a nice reminder of how far the club has come since joining MLS and the great success that we had in the USL.

The Sounders are playing the Colorado Rapids on the 26th, at Starfire this month? Count me in. I will bring the soda and hot dogs.

What are your thoughts? Would you prefer to see USOC matches at Starfire or Qwest?

MARINERS: Felix suffers first loss of the season

_
Felix Hernandez's scoreless streak was ended after 22 innings in the 6-5 loss to Texas.

Seattle tried to force another walk-off situation but the final out wasn't a usual suspect.

With two outs Franklin Gutierrez singled to right leaving it up to Yunieski Betantcourt, and he drew his first walk of the season to give Ichiro Suzuki a chance to win it.

To Continue...

On the first pitch from Ranger's closer Frank Francisco. Ichiro hit an easy fly ball to center to end the game.

Hernandez's control became problematic in the fourth as he gave up four hits in-a-row. In six innings, "King Felix" gave up 10 hits, six runs (all earned) and struck out nine.

Hitting in the eight hole, Gutierrez was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs scored and a home run in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 4-4. Texas Rangers 1B Chris Davis had other thoughts as he hit his own home run in the top of the sixth with one on.

Leading off the fifth Russell "The Muscle" Branyan hit his seventh homerun of the season.

MARINERS: Game Preview: Seattle Mariners (15-10) vs Texas Rangers (12-12)

After winning a three-game series with the Oakland Athletics, Seattle faces off against a slugging Juggernaut of a team in the Texas Rangers. The two-game series will be started off by Mariners ace, RHP Felix Hernandez (4-0; 2.38 ERA; 36 SO) while the second-place Rangers will set up shop with RHP Kevin Millwood (2-2; 2.13 ERA; 22 SO).

To Continue...

It seems King Felix has found the state of maturity and focus that can finally get him recognized as one of the best pitchers in baseball.

In 16 career starts against the Rangers though, Hernandez has amassed a 4-8 record with a 4.38 ERA. Last season he had a 4.04 ERA and a 0-4 record. He is currently standing on a 19-inning scoreless streak, a career high for the young yet accomplished starter.

Millwood, 34, has yet to last anything but seven-plus innings this season while his last starts have been off-beat as he has allowed a total of six runs in 15 innings. In 18 outings against the M’s, Millwood has a 7-9 record with a 4.72 ERA including a 2-6 record with a 5.05 ERA in Safeco Field.

The Rangers are leading the American League in home runs (44), slugging percentage (.504) and are tied for third in batting average with .277.

Meanwhile, the Mariners are leading the American League in ERA (3.60), fewest amount of home runs given up (15) and are tied for the most shut outs with three. So it is a true offense vs. pitching matchup with both teams not far behind in the other respective categories.

MARINERS: Shift in attitude makes up for less talent in 2009

GM Jack Zduriencik made surprisingly few changes to the Mariners roster this offseason. Closer J.J. Putz was traded and LF Raul Ibanez left for free agency.

Rather than replace them with big-money free agents and huge roster-altering trades, Zduriencik stuck with versatile athletes who brought good defense and positive attitudes.

The saying goes that sports are 90 percent mental, and the Mariners latest 8-7 victory over the Athletics is just another example in support of that.

It also supports that this team may be more than just a brief flash-in-the-pan and could be gearing up for a playoff run in 2009.

To continue...

Tight wins

Over the course of a 162-game season, a team needs to learn to win in many ways. It also needs to learn to never give up. After all, those close victories add up over time.

On Sunday, the Mariners played from behind all game and twice came back to tie the game with only one inning to go.

The final time was a three-run outing in the bottom of the 13th inning. It was obviously a run that took the fight out of the Athletics, who lost the game on poor fielding in the bottom of the 15th.

The Mariners have been winning games in this fashion all year. Out of 15 victories, seven of those have been by only one run. Compare that to four losses by one run.

If the Mariners can keep up that penchant for winning the close game, then they should continue to win far more than they lose.

How are they doing it?

Everyone figured the improved defense would help the pitching, but few thought the pitchers would step up in the way they have.

Here are some batting rankings:
23rd home runs
13th in batting average
18th in runs

Compared to the pitching rankings:
3rd in ERA
11th in hits
11th in strikeouts

For the Mariners, so far it has been all about the starting pitching where even Chris Jakubauskas has had some great outings.

Felix Hernandez and Erik Bedard are on pace to have Cy Young Award seasons, and Jarrod Washburn is pitching like he did with the Angels. All three have sub-3.00 ERAs.

Division competition

The Mariners pitching won't be able to continue this pace though, and they don't have the hitting power to overcome any pitching slumps. So the Mariners will eventually struggle.

However, the division opponents appear to be in far worse shape. The Athletics substituted aging hitters for their usual top-notch pitching this offseason and could be on course for a bad season.

The Angels meanwhile appear to have finally hit the wall of their success. Their offseason losses seem to be more than the acquisition of Bobby Abreu can offset.

The Rangers haven't been good in 20 years. Things don't look to change in 2009.

Good season outlook

On paper, this isn't one of the more talented Mariners clubs in recent memory. They don't have any big hitters (other than Russell Branyan, no one has more than two home runs), the bullpen is still suspect and the team batting average will struggle to be middle of the road.

There are many reasons to believe the Mariners can't keep this up over the long haul, and they'll eventually fall behind in the division.

But if they continue to fight and claw for every game like they did on Sunday and don't give up like they did in 2008, then there's a good chance Safeco Field will still be alive in October.

SEAHAWKS: Projecting the Rooks - Devin Moore

If there's any position where a late-round draft pick can make it big, it's running back. Well, what about an undrafted free agent?

When the Seahawks signed Wyoming's Devin Moore, his was just another name amongst a group of signed free agents. But of them all, he may have the best chance at becoming a household name amongst the 12th Man.

That's because he brings something to the mix at running back that Seattle hasn't seen since maybe Ricky Waters, speed and big-play ability.

To continue...

Devin Moore
5-10
191 pounds
College stats:

The skills

Right now, Moore's best attribute is his speed. He reportedly runs a 4.3 40-yard dash, but he was not invited to the combine to prove it.

Still, the proof is in the video:

As a rusher, he has the patience and vision to take it inside, but he tends to go down on the initial contact and will need to bulk up some for the NFL.

He's a one-cut, downhill runner and should be capable of making some big plays running behind Seattle's zone blockers.

Unfortunately, his receiving skills aren't where they need to be, and he may not have the change of direction ability to be a great returner in the NFL.

Rookie projection

Seahawks fans shouldn't expect much from Moore his rookie year. In fact, it's going to be an uphill battle for him to even make the team. Assuming the team keeps five total backs, he'll likely have to beat out Justin Forsett.

Here's the projected lineup:
RB: Julius Jones, T.J. Duckett, Justin Forsett
FB: Justin Griffith, Owen Schmitt

If he wants to make an immediate impact with the 'Hawks, he may have to prove himself the team's best returner. Still, he should have a heck of a preseason, much like Forsett last year. Between the two of them, it should be an interesting battle.

With all that in mind, the rookie projection for rushing stats is:
85 rushing yards
0 touchdowns

The long projection

OK, so the rookie projection is a little boring, but here's where things get interesting with Moore. It took him a couple years to make an impact in college, and the same should be expected in the pros.

There are a few things he'll need to improve on first. He still needs to work on his route-running as that will make the difference on whether he makes it in the NFL. He'll also need to bulk up some but just another 10 pounds or so should do the trick.

If he does all this, then Moore should develop into a terrific change-of-pace back in the NFL in the vein of a Kevin Faulk or a Charlie Garner (he, of course, eventually developed into much more).

To conclude, here's a video that details why Moore should earn a roster spot this year:

SEAHAWKS: Reading the field

Competition is brewing for several starting positions, and the Seattle Times is laying them out.

Probably the most interesting position to keep an eye on will be cornerback. Ken Lucas is back, but he's hardly been as good these past couple seasons as he was in his last season with Seattle. On the flip side, Josh Wilson is only getting better.

"Josh Wilson is not a guy who's going to go easily, so there's going to be competition there," Mora said.

To continue...

The stiffest competition, though, will likely come at defensive end. Darryl Tapp, Lawrence Jackson and Cory Redding will be fighting for one starting spot. Of course, they'll all get playing time in the rotation.

Other positions have rookie wild cards in OL Max Unger and WR Deon Butler. Butler has a shot with injury-riddled competition, and Unger will get his start at left guard.

What isn't up for grabs is the no. 1 receiver role. Today, the News Tribune takes a look at T.J. Houshmandzadeh and his transition from Bengals orange to Seahawks blue.

Between he and Matt Hasselbeck, the passing game should be in good hands.

The Kitsap Sun has a nice little article on Lucas' return. After leaving in 2004, he was a little upset that the 'Hawks didn't seem to prioritize him much.

But with Marcus Trufant on the roster and Shaun Alexander, Matt Hasselbeck and Walter Jones due to enter free agency, it was understandable.

Now after years of searching for his replacement, the Seahawks finally managed to replace Lucas... with Lucas.

He gives the team size and veteran experience, and hopefully the added competition will inspire Wilson to get that much better. Lucas is only signed for one year, and Seattle will need Wilson to step up as a full-fledged starter given the chance Lucas leaves again.

Case of the Mondays

We all know that game commentating is often lacking. Unless it's a local broadcast, the people calling the game don't know much about the two teams and tend to focus on the most obvious aspects of the sport (I'm looking at you Magic Johnson).

But perhaps after watching this video, we all might gain a little appreciation for the work of the individuals calling the game. Hey, at least they know the sport.

After all, just about any description of a play is better than "and THAT happened."

SOUNDERS FC: Column: Monday morning coffee - Match day recap week 7

It was great to be back in fan mode this week. With the Sounders out playing in "The Windy City" this past Saturday, I would be watching the match in a pub with other supporters. This week I hung out with my brothers and sisters of the Emerald City Supporters at Shultzy's Sausage in the U District.

To Continue...

Shultzy's has the feel of a German pub with plenty of HD TVs, with all of the major channels to satisfy any football fan: GOL TV, Setana and Fox. There is a covered outside, beer garden in the back of the establishment which makes for a comfortable space to mingle and chat with friends.

ECS brought their roadshow with all of the accouterments, in massive numbers. There were rave green kits, ECS shirts and plenty of folks donning the "No Equal" Scarves. When one attends an ECS event it is like being in the middle of a supporters section at a match. You can expect to sing and chant the whole time. It is like they just took the section that does what it does at matches and plopped them right down in the middle of the pub, sans the giant flags and drums of course.

The pregame coverage came on at around 5:30 p.m. Alan Hinton and Pete Fewing really know their stuff, properly informing the fans as to what to expect in the match and what some of the key match-ups would be. Between the two of them, they have several years of soccer experience behind them. I always enjoy hearing what they have to say. We all got a kick out of seeing some of the ECS brethren and other Sounders supporters on TV from Chicago. ECS represented very well in Chi-Town.

The match started and the ECS broke into their standard game chants which made it virtually impossible to chat about the match with friends, but I had no complaints. The sound filled up every space in Shultzy's and flowed right out of the door and onto the streets. It is a beautiful sound, especially when Tyrone Marshall leveled the match in the 74th minute. At that point, the energy level and noise "went to eleven".

Attending a viewing party with the ECS is the closest thing you can get to actually being at a match. Good food, good friends, good football and good times. This Sounders fan couldn't ask for anything more on away match day.

MARINERS: Wakamatsu pushed all the right buttons against A's

Don Wamamatsu opted not to pinch-hit
for Kenji Johjima in the ninth. Johjima
hit a game-tying solo home run.

Sunday's 15-inning win meant plenty of opportunities to either second-guess or praise the decicion-making of manager Don Wamakatsu.

Here are some of Wakamatsu's moves that paid off.

To Continue...

-Wladimir Balentien and Mike Sweeney each got the start. With the Sunday day-game it was no surprise that Sweeney replaced Ken Griffey Jr. in the DH spot, but the decision to give Endy Chavez the day off wasn't a given.

Sweeney was 1-for-7, but that one was a big one. He crushed a first-pitch changeup for a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Balentien went 3-for-5 with a pair of walks as well as a pair of nice defensive plays in left field.

-Wakamatsu bat Jose Lopez in the two-hole vacated by Chavez. All Lopez did was hit his second game-winner of the series.

-With the Mariners trailing 4-3 and Kejni Johjima due up in the bottom of the ninth, Wakamatsu could have gone with either lefties Chavez or Griffey to pinch-hit. Johjima was 0-for-3 (1-for-7 since returning from the DL) and set to face right-hander Russ Springer.

Wakamatsu stuck with Johjima, who hit a solo home run to tie the game at 4.

MARINERS: Lopez delivers again as M's win 15-inning marathon

Jose Lopez

This time it only took Jose Lopez four pitches to be the hero.

Two days after his game-winning hit on a 14-pitch at bat, Lopez delivered again with a walk-off single on a 1-2 count in the 15th inning to give the Mariners a 8-7 win over the Oakland Athletics.

Lopez had two previous chances to win the game but couldn't come through either time. After Kenji Johjima's solo home run tied the game in the ninth, Lopez's groundout with two-outs and runners on first and second sent the game into extra innings.

To Continue..

A's catcher Landon Powell hit a two-run double off Miguel Batista in the 13th. Lopez's fielding error prolonged the inning, allowing another run on Orlando Cabrera's single and giving the A's a 7-4 lead.

After singles by Adrian Beltre and Wladimir Balentien, walks to Johjima and Franklin Gutierrez scored a run.

Yuniesky Betancourt's fielder's choice scored Balentien from third. Ichiro then singled home pinch-runner Endy Chavez to tie the game. But with the winning run on third, Lopez fouled out to end the inning.

After two scoreless innings by winning pitcher and last available reliever Jason Vargas (1-0), Lopez got another shot at redemption.

Gutierrez, who went 2-for-4 with three walks to extend his hitting streak to seven games, led off the bottom of the 15th with a single and reached third on a throwing error by Friday's starter Dana Eveland.

Ichiro was intentionally walked to load the bases for Lopez, whose bloop single fell in front of center fielder Rajai Davis to give the Mariners their second walk-off win in three games.

Game Notes: Mike Sweeney's two-run home run in the fourth inning was his first as a Mariner and 200th of his career. Coming off his two-hit loss last week to the Chicago White Sox, Mariners starter Chris Jakubauskas allowed four runs in 4 1/3 innings. At five hours and two minutes, Sunday's game was the longest in the majors this season. It was also the first 15-inning game this season. Sunday marked Vargas' first appearance since 2007, when he was with the New York Mets. He was acquired in the J.J. Putz trade and was called up from Tacoma on Saturday.

SOUNDERS FC: What happened to Montero?

Montero hasn't scored since the second game of the season. Since his three goal output in the first two games, he's been relatively ineffective. Aaron Weinberg / NSS

During the first few games of Seattle's inaugural season, Striker Fredy Montero wowed established and newly minted Sounders fans alike with his scoring prowess, racking up three goals in two games.

His efforts earned him MLS player of the month honors and had many fans and pundits wondering just how long the Sounders could hang onto Montero before he took his game to the national stage.

But, since the week four loss against the Kansas City Wizards, Montero hasn't lived up to the impossibly high expectations he set during the opening weeks of the regular season.

To Continue...

Yesterday Montero was red carded early in the second half of a 1-1 tie against Chicago for elbowing a defender in the forehead. Before that, he wasn't playing effectively, making errant passes, futilely working against double teams, and generally not being a factor, contributing to an overall lackluster first half.

Montero will now be forced to the sidelines for Sunday's May 11 match against the L.A. Galaxy, giving another striker a chance to shine where the Columbian striker has faded.

outings of the season, drawing comparisons to fellow
Columbian Striker Juan Pablo Angel.

A phenomenal start
Head Coach Sigi Schmid couldn't have asked for a better start from Montero during the team's home opener, where Montero stole the show with two goals and one assist, constantly breaking down New York’s defense with his ball control and speed.

After the game, comparisons between Montero and fellow Columbian striker and national team player Juan Pablo Angel arose.

“I certainly have aspirations to make the national team, but it is not a matter of replacing Angel, we know what he has done,” Montero said. “It is more a matter of creating my own history by playing well in the MLS and for the Colombian national team.”

For the next couple weeks the question surrounding Montero was, "how long could the rising star remain in Seattle before making his way to the national stage?"

Off-field accusations
After two convincing wins and three goals, the club issued a press release stating that Montero was exhibiting flu-like symptoms and was questionable for the team's first away game against Toronto FC.

Shortly after the release, a report from the Seattle P-I linked Montero to two sexual assault accusations stemming back to mid-March.

It's unclear whether Montero was actually sick or remained in Seattle to deal with the accusations. However, once Montero returned the next week, he was held out of the net in Seattle's first loss and didn't seem to be the same player he was two weeks earlier.

Slump
Driving to the net in a 1-on-1 against Chivas USA keeper Zach Thornton, Montero uncharacteristically sailed a chip shot wide left in the 10th minute. The shot turned out to be Seattle's best chance of scoring in the 2-0 loss to the Western Conference leading Chivas USA.

Fans were used to seeing Montero's brilliant finishers, but not that week as the team lost its second straight.

The next week, the Sounders returned to form against Real Salt Lake, but Montero was again held out of the net and left out of Seattle's major plays. The slump continued until Montero was red carded in the 48th minute of yesterday's match against the more prepared and disciplined Chicago Fire.

Starting job
Sebastien Le Toux proved his worth at his more natural striker position in his two goal, two assist output in a US Open Cup play-in last Tuesday.

Schmid subbed in Le Toux shortly after Montero was ejected from yesterday's game and moved him to forward, pushing Jacqua to midfield. Le Toux set up a rare scoring opportunity by forcing a corner kick, then Freddie Ljungberg and Tyronne Marshall did the rest.

Le Toux will likely get the start this Sunday against the Galaxy, and if he shines, there could be a chance Montero loses his starting job.

However, a little motivation never hurt and being benched could be a wake-up call for the slumping striker.
