MARINERS: Series Preview: Seattle Mariners (39-36) Vs. New York Yankees (43-32)

The Mariners recently shocked the baseball world with a 2-1 series win over the top-ranked Los Angeles Dodgers. With momentum in their favor, they look to continue their long-awaited success against the American League Wild-Card leading New York Yankees for a three-game set before heading to Boston.

Last time RHP Brandon Morrow (0-3; 5.64 ERA) faced the Yankees, he pitched a no-hitter into the eighth inning. While he leads the M’s into the risky series, New York will be handing the ball to fellow right-handed pitcher Joba Chamberlain (4-2; 3.81 ERA). Both teams have seemed to have trouble in trying to figure out where to play these power arms, but for now they both are in their teams’ starting rotation.

To Continue...

Southpaw Jarrod Washburn (4-5; 3.22 ERA) has a reputation to be a fly-ball hurler, and with Yankee Stadium built the way it is, he may have to rest his neck after watching the balls sail to the windy confines of the park. Facing him is longtime left-handed pitcher Andy Pettite (7-3; 4.38 ERA).

One of many hidden gems of the J.J. Putz trade is the left-handed Jason Vargas (3-3; 3.79 ERA). Vargas has been one of many outstanding pitchers for the Mariners but is arguably the most surprising. From the other dugout will be Yankees ace RHP CC Sabathia (7-4; 3.55 ERA), who has been trying to match his Cy Young caliber 2008 season.
