The Mariners came close but couldn't quite finish off the sweep against the Padres in a 4-3 loss today in San Diego.
In his second start of the season, Brandon Morrow went a respectable four innings with two earned runs and five hits. His best stat was the six strikeouts to one walk. Manager Don Wakamatsu continued to limit Morrow's pitch count to about 60.
His performance would be for not though as the Mariners offense failed to score a run after Franklin Gutierrez's home run in the seventh. It was his third of the series.
To continue...
Reliever Sean White got Seattle into extra innings by retiring all three batters he faced in the ninth, but he was relieved by Miguel Batista in the 10th. Batista promptly gave up the winning run off a one-on, two-out single.
The real killer for the M's was Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, who went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
In his first major league start, first baseman Mike Carp, filling in for Russell Branyan, went 1-for-3 with one walk and one run scored. With two walks in six career at bats, he's certainly shown more patience at the plate than any other hitter in the lineup.
With the loss, the Mariners failed to get back to .500 and fall to 32-34. Up next for the M's is a three-game series against the Diamondbacks June 19-21 at Safeco Field.
