SOUNDERS FC: Notes from Tuesday training

TUKWILA -- The pervading topic of the day was player health. We are not one third into the season and the inevitable player health issues and injuries are popping up. The most concerning one at this point is the injury to midfielder Brad Evans this last Saturday in Texas.

To Continue...

Evans went up high in the air for a ball and came down hard on foot. His cleat dug into the the turf but his body and knee moved in an awkward direction which looked like it could be either a sprain or tear.

The MRI results should be known either today or tomorrow.

Brad Evans has been has been one of the most consistent players on the pitch and a real mainstay in the outside and center midfield positions. Losing Evans would hurt the club's strategy. Evans is effective on both sides of the ball and settles down the midfield which is extremely important for possesion.

In addition to the knee injury, Evans also received a concussion during the same play as well as a calf injury. He went up hard for the ball and his body paid the price. Whatever happens with the MRI, most likely Evans will not make the trip to Colorado. With Evans out, it is possible that Stephen King will see more action.

Midfielder Freddie Ljungberg left practice early. He is still feeling the effects of a migraine and is in the process of receiving treatment to mitigate the effects.

Defender Zach Scott did not practice with the team but was present. Scott suffered a abdominal strain and groin injury. It is possible that the injury could be more serious in the form of a sports hernia. This would require minor surgery that would require him to sit a spell but be back on the pitch in fairly short order.

Defender Nate Sturgis suffered a hamstring injury last Saturday and remains questionable for this Saturday's match against the Colorado Rapids.

Having Scott and Sturgis out depletes an already thin back line and thus Coach Schmid will most likely go with a flat four of James Riley, Tyrone Marshall, Jhon Kennedy Hurtado and Tyson Wahl with Patrick Ianni and Taylor Graham off the bench if needed.

In other news, The USOC match between Seattle and Colorado, taking place next Tuesday, May 26th at 7:30 will be broadcast on SoundersFC.com.

In addition, a brand new Seattle Sounders FC and Seattle Seahawks retail store will be opening downtown at Pacific Place on Friday, June 12Th.

The Sounders resume training tomorrow at Starfire Sports Complex.
