While center Chris Spencer has what it takes to play on the offensive line, most onlookers agree that his blocking assignment calls haven’t been up to par.
And it’ll only get more difficult as Greg Knapp’s offense transitions to a zone blocking scheme, which takes some of the pre-snap duties away from QB Matt Hasselbeck and places them on the shoulders of Spencer.
But, finally being present for OTA’s and mini-camp for the first time in two years should help Spencer acclimate to his new duties and be better prepared for the start of the season.

In 2008, Spencer’s season ended week 11 with a back injury. But, he recovered in time to make it back to camp.
“Getting out there and being able to knock the rust off early and not having to wait until the season to have to knock that rust off [is important],” Spencer said.
The time could prove valuable as Spencer familiarizes himself to Knapp’s new offensive schemes.
Center is a difficult position to master in the NFL because of the complexity of defenses compared to college.
This season may prove to be Spencer’s sink-or-swim scenario, especially if rookie center Max Unger proves his worth in the preseason.
However, it’s important to note that Unger hasn’t been practicing at center this offseason.
