MARINERS: M's lose late lead, fall to A's

-
After another strong performance from Jarrod Washburn and another display of power from Russell Branyan, Saturday's game against the Oakland Athletics came down to one bold decision.

Bobby Crosby ran through a stop sign to score the go-ahead run in the ninth inning and help the A's to a 3-2 win.

To Continue...

The Mariners got on the board first with a second-inning solo home run from Branyan. It was his team-high sixth of the season and second in as many nights.

After Jason Giambi's sixth inning RBI double tied the game 1-1, the Mariners took the lead in the seventh when Endy Chavez's sacrifice fly scored Adrian Beltre, who led off the inning with a walk.

Had the lead held, it would have given Washburn a well-deserved win. He allowed one run in seven innings for his fourth quality start in five chances.

Mark Lowe worked the eighth inning in relief of Washburn and allowed the tying run via another RBI from Giambi, who beat the shift with a ground ball back up the middle.

Then in the ninth, Crosby's one-out walk and subsequent steal of second set up the games defining play.

Recent call-up Gregorio Petit singled to right field and Crosby not only defied his third base coach but tested one of the stronger arms in baseball.

The risky move paid off. Ichiro's throw beat Crosby, but Rob Johnson couldn't handle the short hop.
