SOUNDERS FC: Around the pitch - Portland may have competition in St. Louis for expansion

Portland could be the revived rivalry
once shared by the Sonics and Blazers.

Portland isn't the only city looking to add a new MLS franchise as St. Louis appears to be turning up their efforts to make a bid for an expansion squad.

Anheuser-Busch has agreed to give the city a site to build a soccer park and will also lobby on the city's behalf. Portland and St. Louis will compete for a spot next to Vancouver for new MLS franchises debuting in 2011.

This of course impacts the Sounders because Seattle would once again have a rival in close proximity, similarly to when the departed Sonics had the Blazers.

Game Tonight
The Sounders host the Colorado Rapids tonight at 6:30. However, the game is closed off to the media. Sounders' MattG says the closed practices are standard practice around the MLS.
“We just want to make sure that we can work on some things in our play getting more specific. As we get closer to our game against New York, we’ll be talking about our tactics,” said Schmid after Tuesday’s session, which was open to the media for the final 15 minutes. “Once we get two or three games into the season everybody can fill out everybody else’s lineup card. At this part of the season, it’s a little more uncertain and we’d rather have New York guess a little bit and I’m sure New York would rather have us guess a little bit.”
