SEAHAWKS: Phili interested in FB Weaver

Weaver fits right into the
Eagles' West Coast offense.

After a quiet free agency for Leonard Weaver, a team is finally showing serious interest in signing the versatile fullback. Weaver could be paving the way for Eagle's running back Brian Westbrook if the two sides can agree to a deal.

Weaver's agent, Harold Lewis, says they are still in talks with the Eagles.

"Hopefully, we're going to get something done [in Philadelphia], but it would be premature to tell you that," Lewis told the Daily News.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and St. Louis Rams are also showing interest in the fullback.

Pre-free agency hype had Weaver ranked as the top fullback and one of the top running backs due to his abilities to block, run and catch. He lit up the scoreboard for two short pitch and catches that turned into long touchdown runs against the 49ers in San Francisco during one of the Seahawks' four wins in 2008

But when the free agency period began Feb. 27, few teams jumped on Weaver. He and his agent reportedly had overvalued Weaver and few teams wanted to pay too much for a fullback.

The Seahawks have been preparing for the departure of Weaver, bringing in ex-Oakland free agent Justin Griffith. Griffith played under offensive coordinator Greg Knapp in Oakland and is characterized as being a more refined blocker than Weaver, but doesn't have Weaver's running or catching abilities.

However, as the Seahawks look to improve their running game, Griffith may be the better, cheaper fit for the Seahawks. Ruskell appears to be have Weaver's successor lined up if he cashes out in free agency.
