MARINERS: Daily news - Hitters, pitchers and the WBC

In case you forgot about Mike Morse, here's an update on him and his latest quest to make the team.

After hitting .278 in 230 at bats in his first season with the Mariners in 2005, he has seen a steady decline in play time. He's always produced as a hitter, but Seattle has never been able to find a spot for him in the field.

Well, this may be the final year in Seattle for Morse,26, who still has yet to return to form after last year's season-ending shoulder injury.

To continue...

He's a career .300 hitter, and I always thought it was a shame he never received a chance at a full season in the majors. He's no longer eligible for 3A, so perhaps he'll get that chance with another team.

After all the depressing reading about pitchers yesterday, the Times' Larry Stone offers up a little encouragement in the form of David Aardsma.

Everybody knows how good he's been this spring, pitching shutouts in all six innings of work. But Stone gives us a little incite as to how and why the former first-round pick failed with his four previous teams and why things may be looking up for him with the Mariners.

In World Baseball Classic news, Japan lost to South Korea 4-1 today in the second round, eliminating the defending champions from the tournament.

Ichiro Suzuki was held hitless in four at bats, while Kenji Johjima hit 1-for-3.
