
Injuries were a pain-in-the-butt for Erik Bedard last season. That took on a literal meaning Wednesday as the Mariners pitcher was scratched from his start due to a sore muscle in his rear end.
Chris Jakubauskas started instead and didn't allow a hit in three shutout innings, but the Mariners lost 9-2 to the Kansas City Royals.

Mike Sweeney was 2-for-3 for his first hits of the spring. Jeff Clement was also 2-for-3. He and Mike Morse drove in the only two Mariner runs against former Mariner Gil Meche. Royals second baseman Willie Bloomquist, another ex-Mariner, was 1-for-2.
Pitcher Tyler Walker, considered a longshot to fill the Mariners vacant closer position, allowed one hit in a scoreless inning of relief.
Don Wakamatsu said Bedard's sore backside isn't serious and that the lefty will throw a bullpen session on Saturday. Bedard, who had offseason shoulder surgery, looked healthy in his first two spring outings. He hadn't allowed a run in 4 2/3 innings.
