Even before MLS First Kick, it looks like the Sounders FC have already inadvertently backed into a preseason squabble with the Columbus Crew.A Columbus Crew blog, "Crewture", has released an anti-Sounders e-mail post calling out Sounders' owners, fans and franchise as a whole.
To continue...
From Crewture:
Not so much the Sigi thing, but the fact that you have these weak supporters out there in Seattle who couldn't support their club in USL, but then you get a comedian, a Microsoft trillionaire and a producer together to buy them a club and now they are going to fill half an NFL stadium with latte sipping soccer moms to watch an underwear model in a neon kit run around on plastic grass to the tune of Gary Glitter played by a f'in marching band.
Furthermore, the original sender, a Mason Adair from London, has invested his time and money to create scarves, which don the phrases, "FVCK SEATTLE" and "ACES," an acronym which stands for "Any Team Except Seattle". He intends to give these scarves out for free.
MLS-Rumors reports that a Sounders FC fan, designer John Tommervil, has responded to the Crew fan's remarks and free anti-Sounders scarves by releasing an image of his own.
MLSR also poses the questions to readers:
What do you think of club's supporters trying to create a rivalry out of nowhere towards an expansion city/club?
Well, I'll take a whack at it.
Since the Sounders FC have yet to play in an MLS game, this "rivalry" is unwarranted and seems to only be put out there in the soccer world to ruffle some feathers.
I'm sure current Sounders FC head coach and former Crew head coach Sigi Schmid has nothing to do with this?
The reigning MLS Cup champs have had recent success in the league, yes it's true. But this waste of time of causing soccer controversy came out of thin air. Literally, out of thin air. As a Sounders FC supporter put it on MLSR:
Columbus supporters are making scarves that are aimed at us, even though we've yet to kick a ball in anger against them. We consider this a compliment.
And indeed, this should be a compliment. Surely an expansion team from Seattle couldn't be a threat to the all-powerful Columbus Crew??
I think Crew fans have answered this question for themselves. Wear your cheap, free scarves and we'll keep our pride as we watch our Swedish superstar kill it in our sold out NFL stadium, thanks.
