SEAHAWKS: Free agent watch: Laveranues Coles an intriguing prospect

If Coles joined the Seahawks then this wouldn't happen to him

The New York Jets severed ties with WR Laveranues Coles per the receiver's request. The two sides were embattled in drawn-out contract extension negotiations spanning the last two years.

Coles is another name in the WR hat, and will be one of the most sought after wide receivers in free agency next to T.J. Houshmandzadeh. Will the Seahawks look to fill the playmaker void in its WR corps by adding Coles?

To Continue...

Coles (5-11, 198) is a quick, unimposing WR who would fit in nicely into the Seahawks west coast offense. He's a possession receiver familiar with a variation of the WCO the Jets run, so he would seemingly fit right in with the Seahawks.

What might be more important to Seahawks fans is that Coles is the opposite of it's current staff of WRs: not injury-prone. He's missed an amazingly low six games since 2001.

The question is, could the Seahawks afford him?

The quick answer is: probably not. Coles wants to be paid, and was set to make $11 million the next two years, $6 million this year. His age, 31, may be an issue for the Seahawks too, because they can not afford to take in too many veterans on an aging offense.
