MARINERS: Padres win in walk-off

_
Some players shined others faded as Seattle lost its first exhibition game.

It might be snowing in the Seattle area, but it was sunny and warm during the Mariners first spring training game today against the San Diego Padres.

Rookie catcher Rob Johnson made his best effort to convince new manager Don Wakamatsu that he belongs on the team. Johnson hit a game-tying home run in the top of the ninth.

Johnson's homer was spoiled by Padres rookie first basemen Kyle Blanks. Blanks hit the game winning double scoring pinch runner Luis Durango.

Two new Mariners showed their ability to hit. Both shortstop Ronny Cedeno and designated hitter Russell Branyan each went two-for-three with singles.

Staring pitcher Ryan Rowland-Smith got first crack during the Charity game, allowing two hits, walking one in two shut-out innings.

Garret Olson took over in the third and his control issues showed. Olson gave up three runs on three hits, all earned, striking out one and walking one in his one inning of work.
