MARINERS: Offseason dishonors

_
As if it wasn't already clear the Mariners made some bad moves in Bill Bavasi's tenure as general manager, the signing of pitcher Carlos Silva made it to second on this list of the worse moves of last year's offseason.

Silva achieved this dishonor by losing 15 games with a 6.46 ERA last season. Silva was used to losing that many games in Minnesota, but his ERA was the worst of his career, though not far from 2006's 5.94 ERA.

The bright spot is Silva's other seasons showed solid production, and he has showed a great deal of talent in his seven-year career. Silva has been a starter these past five seasons, and despite a chance he may replace JJ Putz as closer, Silva will likely trot out to the mound every five games again this season.

Here's to hoping Silva can duplicate his 2005 season, when he managed a sub 4.00 ERA for the only time in his career. Then we can trade him and his $48-million contract to a team willing to overpay down the stretch. (The Yankees don't need any talent in their farm system, do they?)
